Since February 2010, YOVARIBE in partnership with Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science (MUHAS) execute Tanzania Aids Prevention Program (TAPP). The broad objective of the Tanzanian AIDS Prevention Project is to reduce HIV/AIDS transmission in injecting drug users and their networks in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The objectives of this programme are;
1) Provide peer delivered HIV prevention education to IDUs and members of their drug use and sexual networks that including non-injector drug users, commercial sex workers, and men who have sex with men;
2) To conduct community voluntary testing and counseling for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis C, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and tuberculosis;
3) Refer clients to STD treatment services;
4) Refer HIV-infected clients to HIV care and treatment;
5) Refer IDUs who request help to drug treatment programs;
6) Provide rotations for medical, nursing, public health, and social work students. Also since February 2013 YOVARIBE signed contract with OSF on Legal Assistance to PWUDs.
YOVARIBE Strategy for Community Outreach
TAPP main implementation plan based in execution of community outreach strategy that including
1) Community-based HIV prevention education to promote clean needle and syringe use, including use of new equipment, bleach decontamination of used equipment, and condom distribution;
2) community-based HIV counseling and screening in storefront centers and mobile caravans;
3) community-based referral to confirmatory testing and treatment services;
4) Community based mobilization and empowerment to overcome stigma and reduce HIV relation infection among key population; and
5) community-based referral to drug abuse treatment clinic for medically assistance therapy for clients who need assistance for opioid dependency. Through outreach activities, YOVARIBE has managed to reach 586 IDUs, and 4527 DUs. Also, has provided 158 referrals to MAT, and a large number reported referred to mobile HTC, and local health facility for STD treatments.
